Exorcisms and Related Supplications, English Translation According to the Typical Edition marks the first appearance in English of the rite of exorcism as it was reformed following the Second Vatican Council. The book may be used in the dioceses of the United States immediately upon publication.
This ritual book includes a Preamble, which gives a scriptural grounding to the rite. The Introduction then provides practical guidance with theological reflection, an overview of the place of exorcism within the Church’s office of sanctifying, and instructions regarding the exorcist and the way in which he is to carry out his ministry.
Chapter One contains “The Rite of Major Exorcism,” which can be supplemented with Chapter Two, “Various Texts Which May Optionally Be Used in the Rite.” This material includes scripture readings and additional formulas of exorcism.
The ritual book also contains two appendices: “A Supplication and Exorcism Which May Be Used in Particular Circumstances of the Church,” which can be used at the direction of the diocesan bishop in churches or homes or other places, and “Supplications Which May Be Used by the Faithful Privately in Their Struggle Against the Powers of Darkness.” The USCCB will publish this latter appendix soon as a separate booklet for use by the Christian faithful.
Please note: This ritual book is being sold only to the Catholic bishops of the United States. Priests who carry out the office of exorcism with the express permission of their bishop, or others who need it for academic or other reasons, will need to acquire this publication through a local bishop.
