Pope Francis calls for the formal recognition of lay catechists, who work in cooperation with their bishop as the primary catechist of the diocese. The pope further directs each national bishops’ conference to establish criteria for the admission, formation, and service of lay catechists. Specific norms, as well as the Rite of Institution, will follow.
